Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 11-22-2004

Quote of the day: The world is so full of a number of things, I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings. ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

 Good morning !

Thanksgiving…. thanks…. giving

Gratitude is something most of us understand and "feel". This is the easy part of THANKSGIVING. We can list many items for which to be thankful (full of thanks).

People: Mother, father, sister, brother, spouse, daughter, son, uncles, aunts, cousins. the in-laws, employers, work mates and friends.

Places: Hearth and home, vacation spots, and our vast and fertile Country.

Fortune: job and benefits, a savings account.

Nature: Flora, fauna, lakes and oceans, mountains, valleys, sun, moon, and stars.

I'm sure you could expand upon the list of items for which to be full of thanks.

We identified items for which we are thankful but not the object of our expression. Now comes the hard part…. the "giving" part of thanksgiving. Once we thank our living ancestors for the use of their DNA and our employer for our positions we have to start looking above this realm for our benefactor. The thanksgiving addresses by both George Washington http://www.tldm.org/News6/GeorgeWashington1.htm and Abraham Lincoln http://www.armoryhill.com/thanksgiving.html point us in the right direction…. skyward.  They point to God as our benefactor. Let's face it: most of what we have and who we have comes from Divine Providence.  Before you hit the turkey, 'taters, and pie…. take a moment for the "Big Guy". I'll be thanking Him for everything I mentioned above and for you.

 Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

 Steve

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Fantastic!"

  1) Five DANGEROUS DRUGS on the market….

Accutane (for Acne-but suicide), Crestor (for cholesterol but rhabdomylosis), Bextra (like Vioxx but like Vioxx), Serevent (for asthma) and the diet pill, Meridia. All have been on the market for years. All of the above drugs have found a foe who wants the drug taken from the market. All or none of the drugs may be pulled but the attention that these drugs receive appears to be disproportionate to their true risks. Normally the FDA approves many drugs in December to make the approval numbers appear that they have been very productive. This December I expect fewer approvals because many are suggesting that the FDA is too loose with approvals.

2) Depo gets black box!

Depo-Provera has been on the market for many years and has recently become available generically. You wouldn't be suspicious of the timing would you?

 3) RU Crazy?

(aka RU-486) The third death directly attributable to this drug triggered the FDA response. The FDA could put 37 black boxes around the drug and the physicians using this would still use it. They are not concerned for the “health of the mother” as they purport but the almighty buck. (You don’t see them doing this for nothing).  (tell us Steve…. what do you really think?)

  3) New malady in kids?… Prozac Bones?

Bone development may be effected by fluoxetine.. This comes on the heels of the suicide warnings for pediatric use. Not good in kids but could be even worse in elderly adults already susceptible to hip fractures.

 4) Just in time to beat the Holiday rush…Schering drops 2000 employees!

Just a few details but enough to have everyone interested in sprucing up the old resume.

 5) Not so Wild thing!

FDA cracks down on the Viagra TV ad called "Wild Thing". Seems that they didn't include enough information.  I say TMI.

6) FDA announces "radio deal"

In response to counterfeiting the manufactures will now include special radio tagged chips on their products. A good effort but I believe that counterfeiters will find a way around this as well. (Hope I'm wrong).

7) New Xenical use… diabetes.

Xenical blocks the absorption of fat from the GI tract. This is good news for those trying to reduce calorie absorption even if they can't help but put the calories in their mouths to begin with. Unfortunately, if too much fat is consumed but not absorbed it ends up in the stool. This produces copious amounts of foul … I'm getting too graphic.   Suffice it to say that the voluntary reduction in fat intake is a learned behavior when taking Xenical. Reduction in calories from any source will aid in reducing diabetes susceptibility. ( Now about that big Thanksgiving dinner…. pass on it if you are taking Xenical).
