Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 11-20-2006

Quote of the day: Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.  Cicero, 'Pro Plancio,' 54 B.C. Roman author, orator, & politician (106 BC - 43 BC)

 Good morning !

"F-day"

This Thursday will be the next in a long series of Thanksgiving Days. The Thanksgiving addresses by both George Washington http://www.tldm.org/News6/GeorgeWashington1.htm and Abraham Lincoln http://www.armoryhill.com/thanksgiving.html point us in the right direction…. skyward. Some refer it as "T-day" with the "T" standing for Thanksgiving while to others the "T" stands only for turkey. On the other hand I think of the day in terms of words beginning with the letter "F":

Family- for those who have gone before us and those that follow; grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, children, nieces, nephews.

Friends- hopefully all of the above plus neighbors, co-workers, and other friends, old and new.

Faith- hard to say anything here that won't offend someone. You know your beliefs. Follow them for good.

Formation- Families are the first teachers with formal schooling filling in the gaps (like calculus which I am very thankful I do not have to take again)

Fortune- Work with meaning is rewarding in itself but it is nice to be able to store up some treasure along the way.

Fitness- Without health, it is difficult to enjoy anything else. "F"armaceuticals play a bigger role as we age and I am thankful for drugs (see also Fortune).

Food - More than enough for most of us.

Fun - Leisure time is a blessing we enjoy while most of the third world works sunup to sundown every day.

Be thankful for the " F's " in your life. Some have fewer friends and family; smaller fortunes or less food. Reach into your own personal cornucopia (horn of plenty) and share.

 Steve

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Excellante"  (someone feeling both excellent and cosmopolitan)

1) FDA warns about TamiFlu

Delerium or self injury reported in over 100 people. Some experience panic, hallucinations or convulsions. Most reports are from Japan.

2) Formulate steps to save heart patients.

Patients have precious few minutes once a myocardial infarct commences. New ER policy allows cath lab preparation based upon initial physician's assessment or even information received via paramedics en route to the hospital. The new system alerts all personnel required with one call instead of contacting each individually so that everyone is ready to act within 20 minutes. (A cardiologist onsite 24/7 should also help.

3) FDA website for kids

Site encourages youth to know about medicines and talks about self-medicating with over the counter drugs.

4) For your nose

New topical nasal steroid approved; Omnaris (ciclesonide) which is likely the combination of the word "omni" (all) and "nares" (nostrils)… now THAT is a strong marketing mission!

5) Flu shot shortage after hype about surplus

Some docs are irked that they can not vaccinate patients prior to the public health tsunami know as Thanksgiving. The most highly traveled weekend allows germs from all over the country to be shared with friends and family. Timing means a lot with immunizations. While quantities are sufficient, the distribution channels seem a bit fuzzy aloowing for spot shortages. Get your influenza shot as soon as possible.

6) "F"arma quakes before congressional changes

This article outline 6 ways that congress can hurt Pharma. (Some, like "F"izer, may be hurt less than others).

7) Foolish Pharmacy robber overpowered

Gunman took 6 hostages and demanded drugs. Once under the influence of the Xanax and narcotics the gunman was bludgeoned with his own weapon by a 70 year old hostage. Only the gunman was injured….. and we can all give thanks for that.
