Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 11-13-2006

Quote of the day:    Calendars are for careful people, not passionate ones.

Chuck Sigars, The World According to Chuck weblog, September 8, 2003

Good morning !

Just back from vacation…. not a lot of time to write the prolog. I guess you'd have to rank me as passionate!

Here are some thoughts about Veterans in honor of November 11, Veteran's Day as passed on to me by my brother (original source unknown):

It is the VETERAN , not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN , not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the VETERAN , not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN , not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN , not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN , not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.

  It is the VETERAN ,
   who salutes the Flag,

   It is the veteran ,
   who serves under the Flag,

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE
UPON THEM.

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "As good as I'll ever be!"

pps. I would like any and all of you to send me a list of the most interesting NICKNAMES you have come across (and the reasons for them).

  ------------

1) Generic Tylenol wired!

Generic acetaminophen tablets made in one machine that prematurely worn donw may contain small pieces of wire or metal. I've heard of multivitamins with iron but not acetaminophen with copper! Not like it is large… only 11 million bottles!

or see the FDA site http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/perrigo/perrigocustlist.html

2) Oral contraceptives rated as carcinogens.

Increase your risk of breast cancer?…. try oral contraceptives. Results

3) Primary care doctors shut out new patients.

Appears that each practice has reached capacity and fewer physicians are opting for primary care. Similar things are happening in pharmacy where fewer pharmacist are opting for retail practice…. forcing the salaries higher to attract Pharm D's to retail.

4) Too much of a good thing… a bad thing?

CHOIR study saw an increase in heart attacks in patients taking Procrit for anemia associated with renal failure. May be related to excessive dosing and overstimulation of blood forming elements. You KNOW this will will be studied further… just too much money at stake….. not to mention those "patient things".

5) Minnesota firm sells off drug unit

3M (formerly known as Minnesota Minning and Manufacturing) to sell drug unit $875 million for North America and $875 million for Europe. Pretty good money for dumping a non-core business.

6) Here you go Democrats

With the election results less than a week old we'll see if the Democrats can make Medicare Part D better that they did when they helped pass it. (short of price controls My money is on more drug expenditures, not less)

7) Ponce de Leon's dream

Can human cells be fooled into thinking and acting younger than they are? Drugs are under development that could increase your healthspan as well as lifespan. Simulates the effects of caloric restrictions. (Anybody think about eating less?)

Have a SUPER-FANTASTIC week.

Steve
