Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 11-08-2004

Quote of the day: "A politician thinks of the next election; a statesman of the next generation." — James Clarke, U.S. politician (1854–1916)

Good morning!

 Good morning !

Now that the election season is over and the flu season has started (both can cause nausea) I though I'd just leave you with this ditty to remind you how to be careful out there!

On the twelfth day of flu season my true love gave to me….”

TWELVE DRINKS OF WATER: Be sure to keep yourself hydrated if you get a fever, vomiting or diarrhea

ELEVEN "T-TOTALERS": Skip the Hot Toddy! Alcohol will reduce your immunity and may interact with the acetaminophen to produce liver problems.

TEN LITTLE FINGERS: Wash your hands with soap and water twice as often as you normally do.

NINE TABLETS: Use no more than nine tablets a day of 325mg acetaminophen (generic Tylenol) and take it ONLY if you DO get a fever (with or without vomiting or diarrhea.)

EIGHT HOURS SLEEP : Get enough rest to keep your immune system working properly

SEVEN HAND WAVES: Don’t shake hands if you can help it……if you must then wash your hands afterward.

SIX FEET APART: Avoid crowds.

"FIVE A DAY": Wash your fruits and veggies and other produce.

FOUR FACIAL TISSUES: Try to keep your hands away from your nose, the usual point of entry for the virus.

THREE SQUARE MEALS: Get enough to eat and don’t skip meals. Keep you immunity up!)

TWO WEEKS TO IMMUNITY: Your vaccination will be fully effective 2 weeks from administration. You will have some protection up until then. Get your “shot” before you are surrounded by sick people

And

ONE FLU SHOT: The most cost effective way to deal with the “flu” is to avoid it. Being vaccinated means fewer sick days and less expense for the “remedies”. Maybe not this year due to the shortage but next year for sure!

Ok everybody…. now lets sing it!…all together now…

Steve

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Spiffy!"   (my fraternity buddy, Jeff)

 1) I've got you under my skin…

Not mosquitoes this week but a new approach to extending the existing supply of influenza vaccine. It is good to see a study of the intradermal approach before it is touted nationwide. Another way to extend vaccine might be for those that get FluMist (live virus) take only half a dose …. its just so crazy it might work. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/493080?src=dne

 2) More on the "Pitney Bowes approach" to pharmaceutical care..

Main approach involved just a few diseases (asthma, diabetes…) so extrapolation to all diseases would be quite a stretch. The article is a bit long but worth the read.

 3) Spare tire predicts stroke…

Fat at the waist predicted stroke up to 28 years before it happened.

Next time you consider eating something before it goes to waist you might want to consider which one (waste or waist)!

 4) Sometimes "hokey" medicines contain real drugs!

FDA finds that two "dietary supplement"  products, Actra-Rx or Yilishen, sold over the internet actually contained Viagra. Life threatening drug interactions could occur. Sometimes you get MORE than you paid for…death.

 5) Which came first the chicken or salmonella?

Straight from the University of Minnesota Farm Campus….Do antibiotics given to animals we consume add to antibiotic resistance or health? Appears that the misuse of pharmacologic doses in humans does the most harm and the use in animals helps protect our food supply. Next time you have a "cold" or "the flu" don't insist on antibiotics!

6) COX-GATE?

Looks like Merck knew more about Vioxx issues earlier than originally claimed. Stock already in the dumper…. could drop further. The legal ads will now take up the advertising slack left after the election.

 7) What would Popeye say…

Olive Oil heart claims approved by the FDA. The FDA has ruled that olive oil can make limited claims related to reductions in coronary disease. The real question is "Does it go well with a spinach salad?"
