Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 10-04-2004

Quote of the day:  It is not advisable, James, to venture unsolicited opinions. You should spare yourself the embarrassing discovery of their exact value to your listener. Ayn Rand (1905 - 1982), Atlas Shrugged, 1957

Good morning!

 Good morning !

Happy Anniversary to us! Hard to believe that I have been writing Pepin's Pharmaceutical Prattle every week for 6 years. More remarkable is that some of you have been reading it for that long! It began as a way to keep in contact with my clients and grew from there. I provide links to the articles and expect you to read them on your own. We seldom have tests except in our daily conversations about, what else, drugs. You may actually sound informed and educated by exposure but you'll have to put in a little effort to read the items that are of interest.

I have shared not only the pharmaceutical news but other things that matter to me. Soccer seasons, wedding plans and pictures, opinions (yes…hard to believe but true), and other little slices of life.  There are now pictures of my Sunroom addition..in progress...linked from the main page. The quotes, cartoons ("101"), weekly philosophical editorial and "pithy comments" for each article help to make the pharmaceutical news ever so slightly more interesting (or so I am told).  Thanks for putting up with what one reader called "One big continuous Christmas letter".

I want to make sure that you get the information you want and need and continue to entertain comments (positive and less than positive).  I keep archive if you need to go back to an article. The links may not last forever so print out anything you think you'll want to keep.

Thanks for all your support over the years…. your feedback keeps me writing when I might have opted to watch a football game over the weekend instead (Is it Super Bowl Sunday yet?). With your permission I'll Prattle on,,,

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" ...

"I'm still alive"

This is best because it was the most positive statement I could get out of a perpetual pessimist.... so far.

pps also be sure to click on the 101 icon to see a sample of mosquito cartoons. (Change weekly)

1) For those of you who just awoke from a week long coma….

Vioxx was pulled from the world wide market. Results of studies revealed more deaths than those taking placebo. The drug was used for pain so patients will seek alternatives : ibuprofen, naproxen, Celebrex and other NSAIDs .The morning the news broke I performed a Google search for news and had to made through all of the lawyer sites which offered to help me sue the drug company. Maybe this is one reason I am for tort reform….

Members can receive reimbursement for unused pills but only what they paid.

See the FDA announcement at: http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/news/2004/NEW01122.html

 and more at: http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/vioxx/default.htm

 2) Intestinal hormone may curb appetite when snorted.

Yes, another weight loss miracle drug on the far horizon,. People who received the drug intravenously ate about 1/3 less that those who did not receive the drug. It is still far enough away from market that it is still knows by letters and numbers and not by name. Concerns over side effects, whether it will work through the nasal spray route, and if the effects will last still need to be addresses. The real question is not how many years it will take to become approved but how much fatter will those who wait for it be if they don't use diet and exercise until then. (Note that the little company that "found" this have partner with the same great people who brought you Vioxx) Maybe you shouldn't dump that Merck stock…) http://www.nastech.com/nastech/pyy or http://www.pharmalive.com/news/index.cfm?articleID=174308&categoryid=9&newsletter=1

 3) Dirty Dozen.... warning not to buy these 12 drugs over the Internet.

Interesting list of drugs for those of you who feel like gambling with their health. (Some are flat out too dangerous without extremely careful physician monitoring… even if you do get the real drug.)

 4) Safer with or without a pharmacist looking at your anticoagulant therapy?

Survey says: SAFER and less expensively. Congress is mulling over whether or not to pay pharmacists for consultative service…. a little more ammo couldn't hurt. (Long and scientific but many of you will get the most out of the short abstract)

 5) "It's a huge undertaking," might be funny if the topic wasn't so serious.

FDA to investigate antidepressants and a potential link to ADULT suicides. I'm sure that depressed people are the ones the most likely to commit suicide and also the most likely to take antidepressants. It will be interesting to see the logic applied to prove that the drugs made them do it. ("They" were able to convince the FDA of a link in kids).

 6) One in four women who quit hormones is back.

After the cardiovascular effects and increase in certain cancers were studied many women just stopped taking drugs like Premarin. After experiencing "hot-flashes" and other menopausal symptoms many have returned. The lowest dose for the shortest time is suggested. Is it me or shouldn't that be how we generally approach all drug therapy?

 7) PFahrenheit Pfizer?

Michael Moore appears to have the pharmaceutical industry as his next "documentary" target. Offering to pay physicians and/or pharmaceutical reps for material to support his bias? … or maybe he is going into THIS project with an open mind…. (and I thought the ambulance chasers were bad!)
