Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 08-23-2004

Quote of the day:

In reality, serendipity accounts for one percent of the blessings we receive in life, work and love. The other 99 percent is due to our efforts.

            Peter McWilliams

Good morning!

 Good morning !

As you know, I took last week as "vacation"  I added a 3 season porch to the house. (I just need to complete the interior finish work in my copious spare time.) Part of the project included wiring for lights. What I learned:

  • - envision then final product when planning

  • -  know the source of your power

  • -  plan the circuit so that there are no overloads

  • -  use a ground-fault on each circuit

  • -  get everything inspected before you "turn on the juice"

(Right about now you are probably saying, "OK Aesop… lets have the lesson of the week. ")

Can this be applied to your career or life?

Have you a clear vision of where you want to be?

What is the source of your power (mental, physical, emotional, and "Higher").

Are you spending all of your energy on the "work circuit" and ignoring the family-, leisure-, moral-, creative- circuits? Have sone "safety valve" you can go to when the pressure builds... even a few cleansing breaths can break the cycle of negative energy. Plan your way from where you are to where you need to be (use pictures and diagrams if it helps) and you will waste little effort. It's a good idea to bounce these plans off of a trusted advisor or mentor before rushing into action. Follow these steps and the light bulb just might go on when you pull the switch!

 1) Allergy sufferer find help from nasal ointment

Research showed that the product reduced the allergy attacks after equal exposure. In theory, the pollen sticks to the ointment and does not go up you nose. There must be something else about it because "placebo ointment' (just as sticky) did not produce the same results. Expect to see more on this.

2) I'll take five pounds of "hooey"

Another British homeopathic remedy found to have no effect when put to scientific study.

Arnica tablets found NOT to work against bruises. Maybe staying out of NASCAR races, bar fights, rugby games, soccer matches or bull runs would help!

3) Where was THIS vaccine when the children were small?

New Step vaccine appears like it will work. Expect the FDA to sit on it for a few more years before making it available. This could save billions of dollars in lost productivity for parents who must stop EVERYTHING to take care of "Junior" when called from school or daycare...

4) Uncle Ely doesn't need any more help right now.

Eli Lilly has announced a hiring freeze. When I lived in Indianapolis, Lilly was considered a benevolent employer who gave to the community. Hiring freeze is not "down sizing" but a common business practice when corporate "numbers" are not what analysts expect.

 5) Get used to it Granny

Take a generic or pay the difference? Take a less expensive proven drug before using a newest "high priced spread"? Horrors! Whether seniors like it or not the new Medicare drug benefit will need to use a formulary. It is the only way that the plan will stay solvent…. just an opinion…..In the past I have been wrong about how easily Congress will cave in to seniors… I don't think we can afford then to cave on this one.

6) What is the best treatment combination for teen depression?

Actually it is fluoxetine (generic for Prozac) and the ability to talk things out. The Fed is likely to issue another warning about SSRIs and teen suicide but this does look good.

7) Reefer Madness!

Study used by the Dutch to stop the sale of MJ in "Coffee Shops" refuted. Link to schizophrenia possible.
