Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 08-07-2006
Quote of the day: The best way to live is by not knowing what will happen to you at the end of the day. ... Donald Barthelme
Good morning !
The Arizona Heart Institute has a program that they call LEARN. It is designed as a way to live "heart healthy". Each letter stands for a precept: L- Life, embrace it E- Exercise A- Attitude (Now why would I be attracted to this?) R- Relationships N- Nurture and Nutrition. I'm sure you are all saying…." Diet and exercise….diet and exercise…. why can't it be something else!" In fact it is different because of the other aspects. If you diet and exercise and are a grouch about it and treat others rudely then your health benefits will be limited. With a lousy attitude you may find it more difficult to stay the course. Without the support of other family members you will find yourself slipping back into old habits. (If you are determined to eat only a salad for dinner but the chef makes steak and potatoes for dinner you will find your resolve fading). The embracing life part?....I believe that life consists of some bad things thrown in with all of the good. Expect some set-backs as part of life but stay positive and live it to the fullest.
=================================================== ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "If I were any better I wouldn't know what to do with myself! "Dr. T. (hospitalist) pps. Occasionally, some of the links require FREE registration.... I'm sure you can handle THAT slight inconvenience. ------------
1) Per Os (PO) Peroxide Poisonous Health claims (AIDS, Cancer, emphysema) are being made for highly concentrated (35%) hydrogen peroxide. The concentrations usually available in pharmacies are in the 3% range. If you ever rinsed your mouth with the 3% strength and experienced major foaming at the mouth you can only imagine the havoc that a solution 10 times as strong would wreck upon your GI tract if swallowed. Some people are injecting it IV (even made it on an episode of CSI Las Vegas). Both oral and IV have proven fatal. http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2006/NEW01420.html
2) Chantix are NOT for kids… Anti-smoking drug launched … 3 months after approval. AWP is about the same price per day as 1 pack of cigarettes so you will be way ahead if you smoke >1 pack a day. http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/060801/pfizer_chantix.html?.v=1
3) Religion blamed for low vitamin D levels in girls. Even though dermatologists have been urging avoidance of sunlight (UV-B) as a way to limit skin damage and cancer, this article blames the low vitamin D levels on modest clothing. Claim that most Vitamin D is manufactured by the body in response to sunlight and dismisses the amount from dietary sources. I’m sure that replacing milk (fortified with vitamin D) with carbonated beverages isn’t helping matters at all. http://www.reutershealth.com/en/index.html
4) Only a matter of time… States are now asking the Fed to speed up approvals of generic drugs, especially the high cost hormones such as insulin and growth hormone. Funny how this coincides with the States picking up more of the drug tab. http://yahoo.reuters.com/news/artic=comktNews&rpc=44
5) Democrats continue to hold up FDA comish over Plan B Acting like the sandlot player whole brought the ball, democrats are forcing the issue on OTC Plan B, the post coital abortifacient/contraceptive. They will continue to block the confirmation until they get their way. Will make it even harder on pharmacist who will have to check ID (for age) before bringing it out from behind the counter.
6) Gardasil not just for girls Dovtors urge vaccine for use against human papaloma virus(HVP) be taken by boys. I wondered how long it would take for docs to catch on that the girls are getting this virus, which can cause cerical cancer, from SOMEWHERE! http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/31/AR2006073100014.html
7) FDA fixes formulation for fighting “flu” FDA has selected the influenza strains to be used in the 2006-2007 influenza vaccines. Made by four different companies the FDA acts as the final referee on which bugs ar expected to be dominant. While 100 million doses are in the works the final supply may be reduced by manufacturing flaws. http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2006/NEW01423.html
Have a SUPER-FANTASTIC week. Steve
