Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 05-03-2004

Quote of the day:

We must learn to be still in the midst of activity and to vibrantly alive in repose.

Indira Gandhi

Good morning! Good morning!

Whn lf gvs y lmns mk lmn’d

Its tough witting without vowels! It harder to get the meaning across but it can be done.

Be creative. Don’t just let life happen to you…. Look ahead (as you are doing) and make some plans.

People buy for emotional reasons as much as for rational reasons. For example, fear of rising interest rates is a powerful motivator for those 3 people out there who haven’t refinanced yet but who are seeing the window of opportunity close. New home owners might be just as eager to lock a rate as they see their potential monthly payment rise.

How can you take advantage of current uncertainty?

What might incent purchasers of pharmaceutical services to do something other than they are doing now? If the pharmacy claims are bundled with their health plan then those cost may not be getting the same attention that they would from a PBM. (If more than 80% of the healthcare dollar is spent on the medical side it would be foolish for health plans to devote more than 20% of their efforts to drugs). A PBM is mainly concerned about prescription drug costs. Focus can be good.

Don't foget your vowels:                                                                                                        A)ttitude E)nthusiasm I)ntegrity O)utstanding servive U)ndying love of you clients,

How do you tap new buyers? How do you keep clients? Use the whole alphabet and you'll fugure it out.

Be creative….. When life gives you lemons… make lemonade!

 Dn’t wrry. B Hppy.

1)  Everything is bigger in Texas!

Jury awarded a BILLION dollars to a fen-phen user. That is about equal to all of the comppany's  earning for 2003. Do you think there'll be an appeal? She is more likely to see the inside of a 1000 fast food places before she sees a nickel.

2) Closer than you'd think…

Comparison of US vs Canadian prices done by pharma organization and backed up by data and references.  I know that generics are cheaper here than from Canada and this shows that brand name drugs might be closer that Congress knows.

3) Lie and die!

Most physicians have been taught to multiply a patient's admitted alcohol contact by 6 and to divide reported compliance by 2. This report speaks to the real dangers of holding back information from your physician. Be sure to fess up to all of the "herbal", "naturaceuticals", and "homeopathic" potions too. Some could harm you while others keep you from getting effective treatment.

Need promotional items like t-shirts, mugs, and pens?

(Talk to my friend Aaron at e-ffective media... he also has a $1000 contest going)

4)  Split pills….not hairs.

We haven't seen a lot of press on this lately. Appears that everyone has caught on to the savings. This story explains the economics..

     5) Next to Martha Stewart...probably the biggest story of the year in cancer…

This article talks about the cellular attributes needed to get effects from certain chemotherapeutic drugs. If you have the right genetics then the drug works, if not then it won't work. Expect this to be a HUGE fining. Labs will prosper, people will not be exposed to surgery and radiation if they have the trait or be spared the use of an ineffective drug if they don't have the right genetic codes. (A drug that is useful in the Japanese population which has 25% of their population with the right gene may not be effective in American who only express the gene about 10% of the time).  Nothing will get you as far in life as a good set of GENES.

     6) "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you… now read this 36 page explanation of how I can help"

This is the same website that seniors are being asked to visit in order to figure out whether to sign up for a medicare discount card or not. They nee to boot the lawyers and get some patient education specialists on board. Take a look for yourself and see if you think you'd sign up if you were uninsured and over 65years old…..

7)  Bush in Minneapolis.

Speaks of US push for an electronic medical record. This won't happen until data entry can be made time efficient for the physician. A menu driven system is just too structured and time consuming. (He talks about a lot of topics so you might have to dig).
