02-13-2006 Quote of the day: Perhaps the feelings that we experience when we are in love represent a normal state. Being in love shows a person who he should be. Anton Chekhov (1860 - 1904)
LOVE? Hearts and flowers to all of you as we celebrate St. Valentine's Day! For the story of the man for whom the feast is named see: http://www.catholic.org/international/international_story.php?id=18661 What kind of lover are you? The Greeks had four words for different kinds of love. They used the word most appropriate to the situation.
According to Robert Sternberg's triangular theory of love, there are three components of what we Americans have all lumped together into the one word we use: Intimacy, Passion, and Commitment.
Men: Be a protector not a predator. Use your strengths as tools and not weapons. You can be Consumate lovers. Women: you don't need my council… but maybe the grid above will help you understand the guys a little better. My love for you is filial, xenoid, and compassionate. I'll save the Consummate love for my wife of 31 years. The consummate love is the hardest to achieve and the hardest to maintain.....I think it's worth it. Your Valentine, Steve =================================================== ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "In love"
pps. I had to look up the fatuous love. It is a passionate love that garners commitment that revolves around the passion. No passion: no commitment. pps. Occasionally, some of the links require FREE registration.... I'm sure you can handle THAT slight inconvenience.
==================================================== 1) Who loves ya? US governmrnt has purchased $100 million of vaccine against the H5N1 strain of bird flu 2) Pay attention lovers! Deaths associated with methylphenidate (aka Ritalin) and amphetamines (Adderal) has prompted the FDA Advisory committee to call for a black box warning. (You know my opinion of black box warnings… largely ignored by physicians). The people who can drive this will be the parents who love little Johnny and Suzie who would rather not have them at risk. Expect a gold rush mentality by pharma to find an alternative. (It takes many years to float any new drug through the system and to the public.) BTW: expect the lawyers to place ads in the next issue of parent magazines. 3) Something to counteract that box of chocolates? The anti-diabetes drug, Amylin, has been studies in people without diabetes. Weight loss is significant. Will the company go after this as an indication? I'd LOVE to know. http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/060209/amylin_obesity_study.html?.v=1 4) Fat lovers rejoice Study says dietary fat made no difference over a 10-year time frame in almost 50,000 women. Same frequency of breast and colon cancer, heart disease and stroke. Just because statistics could not show a difference for the whole group doesn’t mean that it wasn't a factor for some individuals. Bad cholesterol can still be elevated so heed you doctor's advice. http://starbulletin.com/2006/02/08/news/story01.html
5) More babies to love. FDA approved an oral vaccine, Rotateq, to prevent rotavirus infection. While less lethal in the US, this virus kills many babies each year on developing countrie. 6) More to love! Over all cancer deaths were down for the first time ever. The number of men dying of cancer fell and the number of women increased only slightly. Change is attributed to reduction in the rate of smoking. Practice "agape" and help a friend to stop smoking. http://go.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=healthNews&storyID=11158122&src=eDialog/GetContent 7) Why do we LOVE chocolate so much? The biochemical reasons will astound you. Like fallin in love, taking your prozac and a short of heroin. Powerful stuff! http://health.msn.com/dietnutrition/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100123966 ------------ Have a SUPER-FANTASTIC week.
