5)
Too late for New Year 2006…
FDA gives Vivatrol (naltrexone)
an "approvable" letter for reduction of heavy drinking in
alcoholics. The drug has been around for a while as a narcotic
antagonist but finds new life. The drug would be given as an
injection, once a month, to dull the urge for another drink
should the alcoholic "fall off the water wagon". Maybe ready
when the ball next drops.

6) Expiration dates on
pharmaceuticals: Out with the old and in with the new.
One study by the US
Army from 2002 showed that many drugs are still good 5 years
after their stated expiration date. It is a good idea to throw
away any drug not used by its expiration date even though it may
still be close to its original potency. Treating a "recurrence"
of a problem without seeing a physician may cause you harm if
you misdiagnose yourself. You kidney or liver function may have
changed requiring a different dosage of presenting a
contraindication. Eye drops that have been opened are subject to
contamination (bacteria, virus, mold) and should not be kept for
over a month even if the date on the bottle say 2009. Other
drugs, such as tetracycline, can become toxic if left to expire.
Use the new year as a sign to dump the old drugs.

7) CVS make me sick to
my stomach
How unfortunate for the
US Pharmacy chain that their initials match this disease
acronym:
Cyclic Vomiting
Syndrome which is often associated with migraines. For all of
the gory details you can click on the PDF option on the abstract
page.
