Pepin's Pharmaceutical Prattle for 11-25-02
  Quote of the day:

If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (121 AD - 180 AD)

Happy New Year! Good morning!

So what do you have to be THANKFUL for this year?

Life? A wife?

(or husband…the other with a gold band)

A home warm and cozy?

Neighbors? (even those nosey)

Friends upon which you can count?

In the bank, a large amount?

Health? (some say better than wealth)

Wisdom, time? Another fine wine?

Tots with toys? (the ones that make a joyful noise!)

Pink ones girl, blue ones boys.

"Opportunities" and challenges may seem a pain

but when you overcome you FEEL the gain.

You can't pick what you are dealt

but your attitude determines what is felt

by you and those around.

Thanks are what should abound!

I thank the Lord for all of these

and all of you, if you please,

for life without variety would be quite bland

and we both enjoy a helping hand.

With God's grace I'll continue the battle

and subject you all to much more Prattle.

1) Tummy docs say use OTC first!

Tums, Rolaids; cimetidine (Tagamet HB), famotidine (Pepcid AC), nizatidine (Axid AR), and ranitidine (Zantac 75); famotidine/calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide (Pepcid Complete) were all mentioned by name. Expect Prilosec1 to join the list (in about 9 months!).

2) Don't get excited…..yet!

Cialis, a longer-acting Viagra want-a-be, has been delayed after preliminary approval in Europe last week. (a slow start to manufacting is the reason) I expect that the drug will take at least 40% of the Viagra market share in the first year if it is priced right….(it is just an educated guess). It is difficult to dislodge the innovator's product but then look what price did to the Prozac franchise when it became available generically.

3) Bextra…Bextra…read all about it….Sulfa allergy reason to avoid Bextra!

A very severe allergic reaction that causes patients to slough great quantities of skin and flesh and which may lead to death has been attributable to sulfa allergic patients taking Bextra. Before you get too excited…. Celebrex carries the same warning. This may have more effect on Bextra sales because it is the new kid on the block…..

4) Once again and just in time for Christmas, for the woman who has everything (including IBS), …Lotronex.

This is a company site but still gives the Info) There are MANY new restrictions on its use now that it has returned to the market…. but it's back for those that need it.  http://www.gsk.com/press_archive/press_11202002.htm

5) What does HOMELAND SECURITY has with vaccine liability?

On the surface maybe nothing… but this may encourage manufacturers to develop more vaccines if they do not have to worry about destroying their company with litigation. The ANTRAX vaccine was not very popular with thr troops BEFORE 9/11….more work could be done to make the vaccine better and more palatable that it is right now. I think it was a rational fit and will be good for the country (and the world). http://biz.yahoo.com/rc/021119/congress_vaccines_2.html

6) How does Government price control cause higher drug prices?

A few months back the ORANGE CARD had to stop giving such good discounts to seniors because they would have to lowere the price to the biggest consumer of drugs….GOVERNMENT.  This is a MUST READ….crying optional!

7) So what does the drug industry think of its influence since the last election?

Have a SUPER-FANTASTIC week! Steve
